Capstone’s Incontinence Relief System (IRS) consists of the following components.

  • A pressure reducing mattress with a cavity specially designed for our concept by Tempur-Pedic Medical.
  • A specially designed disposable absorbent pad with an attached waste collection plastic bag.
  • A specially designed disposable draw sheet with a hole that fits over the mattress cavity.

The application of the IRS involves placing the draw sheet and absorbent pad onto the mattress and extending the plastic bag through the mattress cavity. The mattress can be placed onto essentially any hospital bed.

Changing the pad/bag is a simple procedure which can be accomplished in less than 60 seconds generally with only one caregiver.

The IRS is a unique and extremely beneficial medical product in regards to the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers due to the following two factors:

  • While the patient lies comfortably on the Tempur-Pedic Medical mattress, the patient's fecal waste is collected in the bottom of the plastic bag. Thus, there is a highly effective separation of the patient's skin and their fecal waste.
  • Furthermore, mattress pressure mapping results show there is an area of zero pressure that extends beyond the mattress cavity to encompass a critical portion of the patient's buttock, including the sacrum.

A hospital trial has shown the IRS is essentially 100% effective in separating the skin of immobilized, incontinent patients from their fecal waste. This is important because "the odds of having a pressure ulcer is 22 times greater for hospitalized adults with fecal incontinence than for those without fecal incontinence." (1)

The effectiveness and important patient care benefits provided by the IRS belie its simplicity. The challenge in the developing the IRS was to designed a mattress that concurrently provided the following features:

  • Non collapsible in the vicinity of the mattress cavity.
  • Pressure reducing and comfortable.
  • Zero pressure in a critical area of the buttock, including the sacrum.

The mattress used with the IRS has been designed for Capstone by Tempur-Pedic Medical and provides the important features identified above. Tempur-Pedic Medical has agreed to Co-Brand the mattress with Capstone.
